What We Do

Helpline Our main focus is to answer questions and requests for information through a central telephone number (219) 485-5677. This enables mothers to call at their convenience and from the security of their homes. We have at least 2 members on a rotating basis to return calls. Providing support, and encouragement over the phone seems to help many mothers. There is no cost or obligation for this service.

Pump Rental We provide several models of Medela breast pumps for rent from a local pump rental station. Our same Helpline phone number (219) 485-5677 will provide the caller with the phone number of a pump rental station. Some of the products we carry are :

Community Involvement We try to maintain a presence at many local events such as the Baby Fair. Information through literature is distributed by local merchants, hospitals, doctor’s offices, childbirth education and breastfeeding classes. We have spots advertising our phone number on radio and television.

Headquarters Nursing Mother's Counsel was organized in 1955 by a handful of women who were dedicated to the task of helping new mothers who had chosen to breastfeed their infants. The reputation of NMC in the San Francisco Bay Area is based on functioning as a small but highly qualified group with major emphasis on providing factual information on all aspects of breastfeeding to the medical community, and providing personal one-to-one counseling to new mothers who want support while nursing their babies.
