Insurers Deal – Good News For Homeowners

Summary:
The increase flooding in the past ten years, have made numerous homes uninsurable. This article looks at the new plans the government has approved with insurance companies to allow  more householders to get home cover . On the other hand, there will be certain people that still cannot get it.

Millions of homeowners will still be able purchase invaluable insurance against flooding. It has been announced that insurers have reached an agreement with the government after they committed to a long term flood protection deal.

Under the arrangement, insurance companies have guaranteed to offer protection to any property judged to have a threatof less than 1 in 65 from flooding.

On condition that policies are in place to diminish the threat to a tolerable level within the coming six years, insurers will continue to make policies available to existing domestic and small business customers. The Environment Minister said that to attain these proposals the government has consigned itself to a lengthy thirty year campaign to improve flood fortifications.
The government intends to remodel defences and implore homeowners to safeguard their properties would mean that an existing statement of policy approved by insurance companies could terminate in 2014.

This proposal comes over a year after floods damaged areas of Hull, Gloucestershire and the Midlands. These floods produced 180,000 claims for flood-soaked businesses, cars and houses. Payouts from insurance companies came to a stunning six billion pounds.
The Minister told BBC World Service News programme: “The insurance companies very pausibly said that it is crucial to have a long-standing scheme – 25 years is the figure that we are going ahead with.

“We are looking at coastal flooding and surface water flooding as well as river flooding, to check that the amplified investment that we have, is continous in the long term.”

On the other hand, the spokesperson failed to say how many properties may fall outside the one in seventy five risk range and be classed as not defendable against floods, saying only: “That is not for government to say publicly.”

He also said how imperative it was that the Environment Bureau makes use of its new powers to prevent any new industrial or housing developments that may be at risk from flooding. He also said that life insurance companies were now geared up to offer better premiums to homeowners who take action to make their properties resistantagainst the probability of rising flood waters
He added: “What has transformed is the climate change forecasts that the scientists are giving us – that the extreme weather conditions are going to intensify in the next 10 – 20 years.”That entails a long-term approach … It is something we have been negotiating with the insurance market. They, quite justifiably, want to have promises that houses are safeguarded and we, quite understandably, want to do that in any case.”

The Chairman of the Association of British Insurers said the deal would ensure flood defence remained extensively available to householders.
“This deal is great news for everybody in jeopardy of flooding,” he added. “We are happy that the government acknowledges that a long-term investment scheme, sufficiently funded, is the easiest way to handle the growing flood danger.”

The ABI had formerly cautioned that more than 600,000 properties could become uninsurable, unless more money is put into our flood fortifications.
